Gum Infection Is A Cause For Concern Among Pregnant Women

Pregnant women having periodontal disease at the same time can place a greater risk for having premature and low birth weight baby. Many risk factors are known for already a long time that may contribute to mothers having babies that are prematurely born and at a low birth weight. The contributing factors may include smoking, alcohol use, drug use and gum infections. Periodontal disease which is bacterial infection of the gums has been pointed out as the new risk factor. Women who are pregnant and with periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a baby that is too small and may undergo pre-term birth. Recent dental studies suggest that periodontal disease may impact pregnancy outcomes. Periodontal disease is certainly a cause for concern among pregnant women because it is an infection that poses a greater risk to the baby's health.
