If gum disease is not treated, the gums may swell, forming a little pocket around the tooth. Plaque collects in this and cannot be removed by a toothbrush. When plaque is left on the teeth it may harden to form tartar. You need to be meticulous in following our oral hygiene instructions. The first two weeks is most critical. Mild gum infection usually responds better to treatment that advanced cases. You will need to have a professional tooth cleaning more often to reduce swollen gums and remove plaque. Rather than having this done every six months, you will now need to have it done every three months. Additionally, more time will need to be allotted for this cleaning, and your hygienist will have to have more than the ordinary level of expertise to handle your case.
